Benfleet and District Historical Society

TThe Society was started in 1955 and since then has enjoyed a successful series of regular monthly meetings (usually during the winter months) covering historical matters both local and national.

During the summer months outings were normally arranged by the Outings Secretary to local historical sites and buildings. However, the COVID-19 restrictions from HM Government curtailed the Society’s summer programme in 2020 and no outings were possible.

Similarly, the regular openings of the Dutch Cottage on Canvey Island during the summer had to be cancelled as social distancing would have been impossible in such a small cottage, even if the 1 metre standard applied. In addition, the gathering of people in small groups was disallowed.

It was with regret that we had to close all activities but it was the safest way to limit cross infection.

Dutch Cottage Canvey IslandSubject to the imposition of further controls we hope that our planned
meetings in the winter from October 5th will go ahead. The remaining dates
for this year are given on the Meetings and Outings page of our Website.

Under normal circumstances private visits can be arranged through the
Curator (01268 698276) but these will not now be possible until next year.
